- 106th Congress to Consider ED Issues Newly elected Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL) plans to urge the Consumer Product
Safety Commission and the Department of Commerce to take action against toys that contain phthalates, plasticizers that make polyvinyl chloride
flexible. Schakowsky also plans to introduce legislation requiring labeling of toys containing "toxic" substances.
- Unanimous NRC Endocrine Disrupter The director of the board on environmental studies and toxicology at the National
Research Council is optimistic that its report on endocrine disrupters can be completed by the end of the year without a minority report. Earlier
reports indicated the committee was unable to reach consensus because of a rift between industry and environmental advocates.
- Natural Estrogens May Be More Potent EDs Than Synthetic Chemicals A study published in the October issue of
Endocrinology indicates that "relatively low estrogenic potencies of suspected endocrine disrupters suggests that these chemicals alone
are unlikely to produce adverse effects during fetal development."
